New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the policy on long-term leasing of railway land to implement the PM Gati Shakti framework. This policy will give more revenue to Railways with employment generation potential of around 1.2 lakh jobs. On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced a new initiative to develop and upgrade schools across India.
“Today, on Teachers’ Day, I am happy to announce a new initiative – development and up-gradation of 14,500 schools across India under the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) scheme. These will become model schools that will Will encapsulate the full spirit of NEP,” tweeted PM Modi.
The new National Education Policy was launched in 2020. The NEP replaces the 34-year-old National Education Policy formulated in 1986 and aims to pave the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems.
The major decisions announced by the Union Cabinet are as follows:
- Approval of Railway Land Licensing under PM Gati Shakti Programme.
- Union Minister Anurag Thakur told the media after the cabinet meeting that the new policy would help in providing land leases for a longer period of up to 35 years as against five years at present.
- With employment generation potential of around 1.25 lakh jobs, this policy will also bring more revenue to the Railways; 300 cargo terminals will be developed in five years.
- The government said the PM Gati Shakti program will help in setting up 300 cargo terminals and generate 1.25 lakh jobs.
- Under the PM-Shri Schools scheme, more than 14,000 schools including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas will be strengthened to emerge as PM-Shri Schools (PM Schools for Rising India).
- The total project cost for five years would be Rs 27,360 crore. Of this, the central share would be Rs 18,128 crore.
- The government expects that 187 lakh students will benefit from this scheme.
