NET, SET, SLET Mandatory For Direct Recruitment Of Assistant Professors: UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made an announcement regarding the minimum qualification for appointment of teachers and academic staff in universities and colleges. As per the amended rules, National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) will serve as the minimum criteria for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor.

The new rules have come into effect from July 1, 2023. This means that persons seeking to be appointed as assistant professors in universities and colleges will have to qualify NET, SET or SLET examinations as per the guidelines laid down by the UGC. These eligibility tests are designed to assess the knowledge and aptitude of the candidates in their respective fields.

By implementing these revised rules, the UGC aims to maintain high standards of teaching and ensure that candidates have the required qualifications for teaching posts.

The UGC notice states, “NET/SET/SLET shall be the minimum criteria for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor for all higher education institutions.”

The recent amendments to the UGC bye-regulations mark an effort to strengthen and maintain standards of education in higher education institutions. By requiring candidates for the role of Assistant Professor to pass the required eligibility test, the amendment aims to ensure that only qualified persons are appointed to these posts.
